PETALING JAYA: A coupon parking system will be implemented as an alternative to the current parking machines in the city.

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain said the system will take effect on Monday throughout Petaling Jaya.

The coupon parking system was in use in PJ previously but was discontinued in 2001.

“This system which includes all the current on-street parking, is implemented to manage the car parks in Petaling Jaya,” Mohd Azizi said at a press conference held at its headquarters.

Three types of coupons will be available – an hourly coupon booklet at RM6 where each booklet contains 10 coupons worth 60 sen.

The daily coupon booklet is sold at RM25 and has five coupons, each at RM5.

Monthly passes at RM100 are also available where each pass can be used for the whole month.

“With this system, there is no more complaints of the parking machines not working. The booklets will be easily available at most retail shops,” Azizi said.

The council has appointed 16 agents to distribute the booklets to the shops.

It was previously reported that the new parking system will be implemented citywide once the services of current parking concessionaire Godell Parking Sdn Bhd are terminated. There are over 700 parking machines in the city to cater to about 21,000 public parking bays, but more than half of them are faulty.
