Man wielding parang robs bank of RM46,000

- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Armed with only a parang, a lone robber pulled off a heist at a bank in Jalan Imbi before coolly escaping with RM46,000 yesterday.

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohd Sukri Kaman said the robber, who donned a face mask, had approached a teller at the UOB Bank counter before whipping out a machete from his shoulder bag at about 12.15pm.

He said the robber handed over the bag to the terrified staff and ordered it to be filled with cash.

He then snatched the bag and nonchalantly stepped out of the bank as stunned staff and customers watched helplessly.

Mohd Sukri said the suspect fled on foot and is believed to have bolted with an accomplice who was waiting on a motorcycle.

He said the robber did not harm anyone and efforts to track him down are ongoing.

It is yet to be known if security guards were present during the heist or how the robber made his escape from the area.

However, police are gathering footage of the bank’s closed-circuit security cameras and those in the vicinity to track down the suspect.

Those with information are urged to call 03-21159 999 or contact the nearest police station.
