Sultan Abdul Halim laid to rest

ALOR STAR: The late Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, was laid to rest at the Langgar Royal Mausoleum yesterday at 5pm.

The royal cortege earlier left Istana Anak Bukit accompanie­d by an 89-gun salute, signifying the age of the Sultan.

His remains were placed on a carriage and drawn slowly through Jalan Anak Bukit, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Langgar, accompanie­d by members of the royal family and the public.

After the burial, the “talkin” was recited by Kedah Mufti Datuk Syeikh Fadzil Awang to conclude the funeral.

Thousands of people and scores of dignitarie­s turned up to pay their last respects to the beloved ruler, who was described as one who had the interest of the people at heart.

Many said his passing was a great loss to the country as Sultan Abdul Halim was close to the people.

He was born on Nov 28, 1927, and acceded to the Kedah throne on July 15, 1958, after his father Sultan Badlishah Sultan Abdul Hamid passed away.
