13 years’ jail for armed robbery

PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man was yesterday sentenced to 13 years’ jail and nine strokes of the cane by the sessions court for armed robbery.

Judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar handed down the sentence on Wira Doni Riduan, 33, after finding him guilty.

Wira Doni, who has a nineyear-old child, was charged with robbing one Sim Hock Beng, 39, of RM1,000 and a handphone while armed with a machete at a cyber centre in Pelangi Damansara, at 1am on April 4.

He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on the day of the robbery.

The prosecutio­n was conducted by deputy public prosecutor V. Suloshani while Wira Doni was unrepresen­ted.

In a separate case at the same court, two friends were sentenced to five years’ jail and given three strokes of the cane each for robbing a woman at a car park of a shopping centre here.

Mohammed Mokhzani handed down the sentence on Mohd Faizul Nizam Hamzah, 30, and Mohamad Faizal Mohd Sharif, 26, after the two changed their plea to guilty. Mohd Faizul, who is a mechanic, and trader Mohamad Faizal, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbing one Jama’ayah Mohamed, 53.

They were brandishin­g an object resembling a pistol, at the car park of Jaya One shopping centre in the incident at 2.39am on Jan 8.

The woman was robbed of two handphones, RM750, two credit cards, a gold ring and a gold chain.

They have been ordered to serve the sentence from the date of their arrest on Jan 8.
