EC: Voter registration cannot be done by phone

> Commission warns of illegal methods for signing up being promoted via social media

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has warned the public against registering as voters through methods suggested on social media or other online platforms, as it is illegal and invalid.

Its chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the commission have found that certain quarters were spreading false information through social media, claiming that voter registration could be done by sending a picture of their MyKad to a certain phone number.

“We would like to stress that the method is illegal. The method used presently requires individuals to present themselves at EC counters, any computerised post offices or through ECappointed assistant registrar officers.

“They need to produce their original MyKad, fill in and sign a form. After registering, applicants should receive a copy of the form for reference,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Mohd Hashim also said that appointed assistant registrar officers who are found to be conducting registrations via unapproved methods would have their appointments stripped immediately.

“In fact, they also face legal action for falsifying applicants’ signatures.”

Mohd Hashim said the public should be more wary and not be duped by such online messages as it may lead to personal information being misused for other purposes.
