RM600k man CAUGHT

- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN

KUALA LUMPUR: A smoothtalking conman who walked into a bank in Damansara Heights here last month and coolly made off with RM600,000 from the safe room, has been arrested by police.

After more than three weeks on the run, the suspect, who is in his 30s, was nabbed at his house at Batu Berendam, Malacca at about 7pm yesterday.

I t i s l earnt t hat a t eam of detectives from Kuala Lumpur CID had gone to Malacca to conduct surveillance on the suspect, after receiving a tip-off.

The suspect, who is married with two children, was taken to Kuala Lumpur yesterday, and remanded for four days to facilitate further investigations.

Sources told theSun police had recovered about RM80,000 of the loot at a house in Kuala Lumpur.

It is also learnt that days after pulling off the theft, the suspect had passed the rest of the loot to at least five other individuals for safekeeping.

Police yesterday urged those who were given the cash by the suspect to quickly surrender or face bigger issues when the law tracks them down.

On Sept 8, “armed” with only a piece of paper, the thief, who carried a backpack and wore a T-shirt, Bermuda shorts and slippers, had

walked into the bank posing as a fire extinguisher maintenance man.

He was in and out of the bank with the money in just 20 minutes but it was not until about two hours later that bank staff discovered the money missing.

He had identified himself to bank staff as a technician there to inspect the serviceability of the fire extinguishers and asked to be allowed into restricted areas.

He showed the staff a document that was ostensibly the floor plan of the place, but was denied access to restricted areas when he failed to show the bank manager proper identification.

However, he stayed on after the manager left for lunch and casually walked into the staff area where he mingled among the bank staff, including the chief cashier.

He later slipped into the safe room, where he bundled the cash into his backpack and casually left after telling an unsuspecting security guard that he would return to complete the inspection after getting his colleague to assist him.

theSun’s front page story yesterday revealed the suspect had been behind a string of crimes since 2014, prior to his biggest haul at the bank last month.

Since his image was released to the public on Sept 18, police had been contacted by over 20 victims of the smooth and slick criminal who revealed how they lost cash and valuables to him.
