RM365 million for endocrine hospital
> New facility will cater to growing number of patients: Subramaniam
PUTRAJAYA: The government has allocated RM365 million to build the country’s first endocrine hospital complex to cater to the growing number of endocrine patients, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
Endocrine diseases occur when the body produces too much or too little endocrine hormones, that causes hormonal imbalance that affects the metabolic function of the body and other organs.
Subramaniam said the construction of the complex, that started early this year, would provide medical and surgical services as well as a training and research centre when it is ready by 2020,.
“The 10-storey building will be equipped with 220 patient beds, specialist clinics, basic surgical training rooms, simulation rooms, a physical rehabilitation fitness centre, hydrotherapy pool, sleeping laboratory and will become an institute for training and producing more endocrinologists in the medical and surgical fields.
“Many people suffer from endocrine diseases, with 3.5 million Malaysians between the age of 18 and 40 suffering from diabetes, of which 8% do not know they have diabetes,” he said yesterday after launching a new block at Putrajaya Hospital that will house the complex.
Subramaniam said the government spent RM25 billion on health facilities last year and only RM600 million was collected through outpatient and specialist fees and purchase of medical supplies by patients. – Bernama
