From phone to doorstep

> Cashing in on our love for food, UberEATS delivery service promises to satiate our cravings

- S. INDRA SATHIABALAN

BUSY city-dwellers in Kuala Lumpur can now have their favourite meals delivered directly to their doorstep with the new UberEATS smartphone app available on iOS and Android.

Users just download the UberEATS app and choose the food they want from some 200 restaurant partners, which will then be delivered to their home or office within 35 minutes.

Users can even track their order as the delivery drivers make their way to them.

Payment can be done via credit or debit card, with no minimum order. There is, however, a RM5 delivery fee.

UberEATS is currently serving Kuala Lumpur’s central business districts of Bangsar and Damansara Heights from 9am to midnight seven days a week, but there are plans to expand to other areas in the near future.

Kuala Lumpur is the 10th city in Asia to launch UberEATS, after Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Singapore.

Additionally, UberEATS Malaysia is working closely with Jakim to ensure delivery methods address halal concerns.

At the recent launch in Kuala Lumpur, UberEATS Malaysia & Singapore general manager Shri Chakravarthy Gopalakrishnan showed off two different delivery bags that are used to deliver halal and non-halal food.

There are currently 200 UberEATS restaurant partners offering a range of Asian and Western cuisine, from burgers to rice dishes and desserts.

“At Uber, we are looking for ways to bring Malaysians more choices at a touch of a button,” said Shri.

“This time, we are bringing consumers, restaurant partners, and delivery partners together in a digital marketplace celebrating Malaysia’s great cuisine and love for food.

“Using the power of Uber’s technology, we are going to help Malaysians enjoy the food they want, right now, at the touch of a button.”

UberEATS is also offering job opportunities for Malaysians and also providing restaurant owners the tools to improve their business, with analytics and insights to make better data-driven decisions.

When asked what made UberEATS enter a market which already has many existing food delivery services, Shri said: “What we are focusing on is our own business fundamentals, which are speed and delivery.”

Declining to comment on other, more established, players in the market, Shri added: “We think there is so much potential of growth in this market, not just KL but also other cities in Malaysia.”

UberEATS APAC regional general manager Allan Penn said: “Even though we began on the transportation side, we are really built for this type of business.

“The marriage of operations, technology and logistics, is good business sense for us.”

The launch was also attended by Uber Malaysia marketing head Geraldine Wong and Uber head of communications for Southeast Asia Leigh Wong.

UberEATS is presently available in 27 countries and over 100 cities globally.

And from now till Oct 21, UberEATS app users can enjoy free delivery on their first three orders by just entering the promo code KLTASTY.
