KUALA LUMPUR: Eighteen contestants from across the nation are vying for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 crown which is set to take place at The Majestic Hotel here on Jan 24 next year.

The Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation national director Datin Elaine Daly said the contestants were chosen after a nationwide search.

Stressing the competition will be tough, she said the winner will have the chance to travel abroad to represent Malaysia at the Miss Universe pageant.

“Additionally, she will also receive a cash prize of RM50,000, sponsored prizes worth over RM150,000, and a full education scholarship from a local university,” she said.

Kuala Lumpur finalist Liliana Fernandez said being confident and true to oneself is an important asset that a woman should possess.

Spotting a short hair crop dyed light green, she admitted that her appearance was different from those with long locks.

“Being different is just being true to yourself. I’d also wish to share that one’s body appearance does not matter much,” the 20-year-old Early Childhood Education intern said while relating her past experience during castings.

The eldest of two hopes to heed her mother’s advice to be determined and work to win the crown.

Another finalist, Alexis Sue Ann, agreed that confidence remains a fundamental key to success.

“Given the opportunity, I wish to raise awareness on cyber bullying and start campaigns in schools for the younger generation,” the 22year-old television host said.
