Encouraging the creative media and arts industry
THE creative media and arts sector is one of the emerging but often overlooked sector in Malaysia. While the industry is slowly gaining traction, the understanding of the sector is still largely low.
Being a nontraditional, niche subject, creative media and arts studies are often not the first choice when it comes to higher education, due to the unfamiliarity and the opportunities the sector could bring. However, the large, untapped potential in the creative media and arts industry in Malaysia and the expansion of this industry comes with the need for talent with niche skills.
There is a huge gap in the market where content creation is concerned, especially for our local producers to garner welldeserved recognition internationally. The production of creative content, be it computer games, virtual reality simulations, film or even fashion requires a combination of creativity and ability to use technology.
British Council Malaysia will be hosting sessions on study and career opportunities where panel experts from UK universities and representatives from different industries speak on emerging subjects.
The next session is the Subject and Careers Seminar – Creative Media and Arts which will be held at PJ Live Arts, Jaya One on Oct 28. British Council Malaysia has invited two representatives from UK universities and a UK alumna who is currently working in the jewellery design industry.
Prof Andrew Kulman from Birmingham City University will be speaking on Communicating with a smile: How visual ideas transcend language barriers, while Tim Metcalfe from University of Southampton will
present his topic on Graphic Design.
Vennice Aw completed her BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing Design for Industry at Birmingham City University in 2015 and upon graduation, she worked as a lecturer in Raffles College and is now working as a designer in DeGeM.
She loves natural and unique designs, especially when they are transformed into elegant and beautiful art pieces. Her designs are influenced by both vintage and modern styles. She loves to design collections with hand drawing or 3D software and making jewellery with bench work skills. She also loves travelling which keeps her updated on the latest jewellery trends and designs internationally.
The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. They work with over 100 countries in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society.
