Woman sent to gallows for drug trafficking
GEORGE TOWN: Two people charged with drug trafficking faced different fates at the High Courts here when one of them was sentenced to death while the other escaped the gallows.
In the first case, Nor Azri Izzati Rosle, 21, was sentenced to death by judicial commissioner Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed after the prosecution succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against her.
Nor Azri, a former salon worker, was charged with another person who has since passed away, with trafficking in 103.35g of methamphetamine at No. 54, Tingkat Indah 2, Taman Bukit Indah at about 10am on April 28, 2015.
She was charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act when read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
It provides for the mandatory death sentence.
On the second count, Nor Azri was charged with possession of 0.24g of heroin and monoacetylmorphine at the same time and place.
She was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, punishable under Section 12 (3) of the same Act. The penalty is a maximum jail term of five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or both.
For the second charge, Abdul Wahab pronounced a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment, commencing from the date of the arrest.
Nor Azri looked stunned when the sentences were passed.
In another High Court, it was all smiles for Meera Hussain Ahamed Basheer Khan, 39, after he was acquitted of trafficking 192.07g of methamphetamine three years ago.
