KUALA LUMPUR: Responding to Mercy Malaysia’s call to raise funds for its many humanitarian aid initiatives, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has organised a charity golf tournament titled “Angels of Mercy Golf Series”.

The first tournament in the series will tee off on Dec 3 at the Sungai Long Golf and Country Resort, Kajang.

The series will continue with 12 tournaments in the next two years.

The aim of the tournament is to raise funds for Mercy’s ongoing humanitarian efforts in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees are living in poverty.

Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus said the golf series is coming at a crucial time as there is an urgent need to expand clinics and services for the refugees.

“The crisis in Cox’s Bazar is mounting with each passing day with refugees pouring in daily. Two of our primary healthcare clinics are already operating at maximum capacity with our volunteer doctors seeing more than 400 patients a day,” he said at the launch of the golf tournament yesterday.

Faizal said 58% of refugees are children under the age of 17, and 51% of them are women and girls.

“With our ground assessments, we have decided to build a mother and child centre at the Mercy clinics to provide maternity services and others,” he said.

For more information on the golf tournament, participants can call the MGA office at 03-9283 7300 or Mercy at 03-2142 2007.
