Zahid: Mugabe can seek treatment here

-

BAGAN DATUK: The government will not prevent or object to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe coming to Malaysia to seek medical treatment, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said this was in line with the government’s aim of promoting health tourism in Malaysia.

“We have no objection. We do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries,” he said after launching the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) Fiesta at SMK Hutan Melintang yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid was responding to a local news portal report stating that Mugabe, who was facing amounting pressure to step down, and his wife Grace might come to Malaysia.

“I have not received any report on him coming to Malaysia or a neighbouring country.”

However, he confirmed that 93year-old Mugabe had previously been to Malaysia a number of times to seek medical treatment at private hospitals in the federal capital.

“If he wants to get further treatment, he may come (here) or choose to go to another country.

On another matter, he said the National Economic Council will meet today to study several options to address fuel prices.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak will chair the meeting and he is expected to make an announcement to reduce the burden of the people. Fuel retail prices are determined by world market forces,” he said. – Bernama
