KUALA LUMPUR: City police issued a total of 545 summonses for a number of offences during an operation, code-named “Op Samseng Jalanan”, conducted here in the wee hours of Saturday.

The primary aim was to nab road users, who were operating their vehicles without licences and under the influence of alcohol, among other violations.

City police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the operation was held over a four-hour period, involving KL Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) personnel.

“Our operation focused on traffic offences, drug abuse and vehicle theft suspects.

“The operation was also held simultaneously in three separate locations, namely Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Parlimen,” he told reporters.

Investigators also nabbed a 16-year-old vehicle theft suspect during the operation.

“The youth was a wanted suspect by the Klang district police for one of the vehicle theft cases there,” Mazlan added.

Police also confiscated 32 motorcycles and screened 15 motorcyclists for urine tests.

The operation involved 132 police personnel and was also assisted by DBKL which provided the towing service.

In BUTTERWORTH, police arrested four suspected “Mat Rempit” in a similar operation at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road yesterday. The objective was to weed out pre-dawn street racing on highways.

According to North Seberang Perai district police chief, ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor, a police team led by Inspector Mohd Fazli conducted the operation at the expressway area between 1.30am and 5am with some personnel posing as street racers.

“The team, which went undercover, found that some of the motorcyclists performed stunts, endangering themselves as well as other road users.”

The four suspected “Mat Rempit” were in the midst of racing when the police team cornered and detained them. The four, aged between 18 and 20, were held for reckless riding.

Police also issued compounds to several other road users for traffic offences.
