PETALING JAYA: The suspect in the murder case involving an elderly couple and their two grandchildren will be charged in court today.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said the 38-year-old man will face charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt by using dangerous weapons or means.

“We have referred the matter to the deputy public prosecutor and an order has been issued to charge the suspect.

“He will be charged at the Telok Datok magistrate’s court,” he said yesterday. Fadzil said the suspect is facing a total of five charges.

A deaf-mute, believed to be the boyfriend of the couple’s daughter, was earlier arrested and remanded.

Kuala Langat police chief Supt Azizan Tukiman said the daughter of the couple, with whom the suspect is acquainted, has been cleared of any involvement.

Azizan said the daughter, who is also deaf and mute, had no knowledge of her boyfriend’s intention against her family members.

Investigations revealed that there was an argument at the house over a loan.

The suspect, who works at a furniture factory, was arrested on Friday at a shoplot in Taman Pusat Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.

Chia Tee Nang, 73, Lim Mai Shak, 68, and their grandsons Ryan Chia Zeng Xi, 10, and Chia Yuan Bin, three, died in the fire on Dec 13.

Another grandson, aged 12, survived the attack and is being treated in a hospital.

It was reported that police walked through what happened that fateful night with the suspect to get a deeper understanding of what happened, adding that they had a sign language interpreter to communicate with the suspect.

Police initially classified the case as arson but reclassified it to murder following the discovery of slash wounds on the victims’ bodies.

The funeral of the victims is expected to be held today in Tanjung Sepat.
