3-minute HEIST

- BY ASHWIN KUMAR

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten robbers struck at a crowded mall in Taman Segar, Cheras, and escaped with RM1.5 million worth of jewellery in a New Year’s Eve heist that lasted a mere three minutes.

Stunned shoppers scurried for safety as the robbers barged into the jewellery store at about 8.30pm and held up four employees and a security guard.

The robbers, who were armed with hammers, wore full-face helmets with visors and gloves.

Cheras district deputy police chief Supt Ismadi Borhan said preliminary investigations revealed that five robbers stormed into the premises, smashed the jewellery display cases and scooped up the gold items.

“Five other accomplices stood guard at the entrance on five motorcycles. The robbers, believed to be in their 20s, took about three minutes to escape with the jewellery,” he said.

Police are studying recordings of the closed-circuit television cameras at the premises.

Ismadi said police managed to gather some evidence such as cigarette butts at the shopping mall entrance which could be linked to the case. The evidence could be used to help trace the robbers.

Images and videos of the robbery have gone viral on social media. In a 42-second video, one of the robbers is seen holding what appears to be a shotgun while standing guard at the entrance of the goldsmith store and holding up a security guard.
