Improving lives

- BY PAN EU JOE

VETTED Clothing, a newly founded streetwear start-up, combines famous streetwear designs and social causes related to animal welfare. It all started when Samuel Wong was studying for his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in Jakarta where he met his current business partner, Amelia Tay through mutual friends on Instagram. Tay, who was pursuing a similar degree, a year ahead of Wong, has the same amount of love and heartaches when it comes to animals not being treated well. That was when they decided to collaborate with each other on this journey with a strong commitment to help these unfortunate animals. “The word ‘Vetted’ basically means to examine and improve. We will be able to make the situation better and improve lives only by vetting,” says Tay. As future veterinarians, they hope the message would spread like wildfire, bringing a more significant change to the current situation. “The main thing we’re trying to do is to spread the message, ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop’. This also applies to wildlife animals as many are being captured and sold for illegal trades,” Wong explains. With only three people in their start-up, including Daniel Mak, Vetted Clothing’s in-house designer working together as a team, they had to outsource the production of the tees while ensuring the quality and fabric of the tees sold are of good and comfortable quality with it being made from 100% cotton. Though they are a small start-up, they oversee productions in Malaysia and Indonesia to create more awareness about animal welfare. By doing so, they hope to rake in more sales to be able to continue their efforts in contributing to animal shelters in the long run. When asked about the contributions, Wong said a portion of the profits obtained from the sales are donated to animal shelters. “Before we decide on which animal shelter to help, we check for their legitimacy and find out how they will utilise the funds given.” With new designs launching soon, be sure to keep your eyes peeled or better yet, grab a tee and help a furry animal in need today.
