> Sweat your way to healthier skin

- BY PAN EU JOE

HAVING noticed so many new spa centres, Sweatspa was by far the latest and most intriguing trend to hit town. Focusing on making you sweat, this spa doesn’t adhere to the conventional way of making you perspire with hot stones and steam. Thinking about all that steam actually made me worried about the condition I’ll have to endure. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case at Sweatspa.

By using a full spectrum infrared sauna, it doesn’t require any water, steam or stone. As a matter of fact, all you need is the heat from the infrared to make you sweat in a healthy and safe way.

Chatting with Sweatspa founder Sabrina Tang prior to my session at Sweatspa in Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya, it opened up my eyes to this new method of wellness. She recalled the times when she used the sauna and noticed the remarkable improvements in her health conditions specifically in reducing body weight, relieving pain and improvement in sleep, among other therapeutic benefits that she experienced personally. It inspired her to share this method with the world and start Sweatspa. This process also detoxifies our body, helping us revitalise or maintain our youthful skin.

Before stepping into the infrared sauna, I was subjected to a non-invasive body analysis for them to record my pre-sauna condition. I have to admit, it wasn’t an easy feeling sitting next to someone, pointing out my body and weight issues. But it was for my own good and it was a wake-up call for me to start making changes to my lifestyle. Then, it was time for me to head into the room that had a glass and wood sauna cabin situated inside.

To experience the full process, Sabrina actually advised me to go completely bare and enjoy the infrared heat. As a newbie to the Sweatspa world, I did as I was told and stepped into the sauna set at 58 degree Celcius. Truthfully, it isn’t as scary as it sounds.

As I closed the door and sat down to relax while being entertained by short video clips on the television, the heat felt a bit foreign at first but it is completely normal to feel that way. That uncomfortable feeling went away quickly and I was sweating in no time, making it feel like it’s my regular trip to the spa.

My session lasted for a good 40 minutes though normal customers are actually treated to a 45-minute session. Before getting dressed, Sabrina handed me a wet towel infused with energised water to keep me refreshed after the treatment.

Now, it was time for my post-sauna body analysis. Although it was my first session, there were already some evident changes to my health, scientifically speaking. My visceral fat reduced by one point and my total InBody score increased to 71 points which was above the average limit.

I also didn’t feel the need to shower right away after my session, not exuding any body odour and allowing me to carry on with my daily activities. When leaving Sweatspa, I felt mentally relaxed and physically lighter thinking about my next visit.
