3 men may be behind arson attack on Customs officer’s home

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have found that three individuals were involved in the arson attack on the home of a Royal Customs Department principal assistant director in Jalan P11/1, Presint 11 in Putrajaya on Tuesday.

City police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Lazim said police arrived at this conclusion after interviewing witnesses.

“We will examine closed-circuit television cameras in the area for more clues.

Putrajaya police chief ACP Rosly Hassan said police have formed a task force to investigate the arson case.

In the 3.30am incident, suspected arsonists torched four cars belonging to Nor Azman Mat Jini, 59, who is with the federal Customs GST enforcement division.

Fortunately, there were no casualties as Nor Azman and his family managed to escape from their home after a neighbour spotted the fire.

Police have also not ruled out the possibility of a link between Customs officers being threatened and the arson attack.

City Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said investigations so far showed that two other Customs officers, who were not related to the arson, had lodged reports on receiving threats.

“One case was initiated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. The other report was opened under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance.”

Rusdi revealed Nor Azman had also lodged a report on receiving threats but that was in 2013 when he was with a different division.

Meanwhile, police are waiting for the results of the DNA tests on the chair that struck 14-year-old S. Satiswaran, killing him instantly, for new leads.

“We have so far recorded statements from 43 people.”
