Downpour causes flash floods, traffic jams

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A downpour in the Klang Valley lasting over four hours yesterday evening caused flash floods and massive traffic congestion in Petaling Jaya, Rawang and Gombak.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Alimaddia Bukri said massive traffic jams occurred in Jalan Persiaran Surian in Petaling Jaya and Jalan B27 near the Anggun Shopping Centre in Rawang.

Heavy rain that started at about 3pm caused flooding along Persiaran Surian in Mutiara Damansara.

“Stretches of the road as long as 7km were affected, causing heavy traffic congestion in the area.”

He added that the flooding in Rawang was caused by overflowing of the nearby Sungai Gong.

Six houses in Phase Four of the Taman Rahmat Jaya housing area in Gombak were also flooded due to the Sungai Kuang nearby bursting its banks.

Alimaddia said the flood waters at all affected areas receded later although heavy rain continued around the city. No casualties were reported. Meanwhile, an emergency response team has been stationed in Ampang after rocks tumbled down a hillside in Taman Bukit Saga.

On Tuesday, mud and a boulder slid down the hill in Jalan 28 of the residential area, affecting 10 houses.

No injuries or damage to property were reported but the response team will be based at the location around the clock to ensure safety of residents. – Bernama
