Maze Runner: The Death Cure

-

THIS final instalment of the Maze Runner series is an action fest with the hero being saved in the nick of time on so many occasions that it becomes predictable.

The film begins with an attempt to rescue a group of immunes (people unaffected by the disease Flare, which turns people into zombie-like creatures called cranks) on a heavily-guarded WCKD train.

Although Thomas (O’Brien) and his friends manage to rescue many immunes, they can’t find their friend Minho (Ki Hong Lee) among them.

Back at the rebel base, Vince (Barry Pepper) wants to concentrate on working on their ship, and taking as many people as he can to a safe haven far away.

But Thomas is determined to find Minho, and believes he is in a fabled place called The Last City. Along with Newt (Brodie-Sangster), and Frypan (Dexter Darden), they travel to find this place.

They encounter problems from cranks, but are saved by Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito).

They finally discover the heavilyfortified city, and when joining some dissidents outside the walls, Thomas’ implants alert WCKD’s Jansen (Aiden Gillen) that he is nearby.

The dissidents are targeted by WCKD, but Thomas and his friends are rescued by some masked men.

One of them turns out to be Gally (Will Poulter), who survived their last Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Thomas BrodieSangster Director: Wes Ball E-Value: 7 Acting: 7 Plot: 7 run-in. Gally takes them to his leader, Lawrence (Walton Goggins) – currently living on borrowed time due to the ravages of Flare –who agrees to help for a price.

How they get into the city, and try to save Minho and other immunes makes up the rest of this explosive story.

The movie wraps up several unresolved issues, including the betrayal by former friend Teresa (Scodelario), who turns out to be working for WCKD.

There are also a few poignant moments in the end, when a fan favourite meets their demise.

Unless you watched the first two movies, you may not be able to understand what is going on in this one.

That being said, it is a pretty commendable ending to a saga.
