KUALA LUMPUR: The three month old new Myvi pushed Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) sales volume for the month of January to 17,693 units, or above 40% of the total industry volume of 43,930 units, to its highest ever monthly market share.

Perodua president and CEO Datuk Dr Aminar Rashid Salleh said in January, all Perodua models retained their lead in their respective vehicle segments locally, with 9,029 Myvi, 4,085 Axia, 2,776 Bezza and 1,803 Alza vehicles sold.

“We’re cautiously optimistic that for January 2018, our monthly market share is the highest ever in our history. This was spurred by deliveries of the new Myvi, as well as continued strong demand for our other models,” he said at Perodua’s Chinese New Year luncheon with media and business partners yesterday.

“The new Myvi has racked up over 48,000 bookings and close to 20,000 units of the new Myvi have been delivered to date. It’s an overwhelming response. We’re working overtime almost every day and on alternate Saturdays. In terms of production planning, we hope it will stabilise in two to three months,” said Aminar.

After three months, the momentum for the new Myvi is still strong and Perodua’s focus is to expedite its delivery. Overall, over a million Myvi have been registered in Malaysia since 2005.

Meanwhile, Aminar said Perodua is looking to purchase more than RM5 billion in components and parts this year from mainly local vendors, compared with RM4.8-RM4.9 billion in the last three years, because of the continued momentum and demand for its vehicles. All Perodua models have over 90% local content.

“While we expect parts purchases to increase slightly this year from 2017, we’ll also help reduce wastages and thus increase efficiency of operations to improve profitability.”

He said Perodua’s commitment is to ensure the enhancement and sustainability of the ecosystem.

“Volume is important. If we can get the volume, it’ll be good for everybody, including vendors, suppliers, dealers, banks and insurance.”

Perodua reiterated its target for the sale of 209,000 vehicles this year, which is a 2% growth from the 204,900 units sold in 2017.
