Woman killed for rejecting marriage proposal

-

PETALING JAYA: A 37-year-old murder suspect who surrendered himself to police on Monday after killing a woman he claimed to be his girlfriend at a shopping mall carpark was driven to commit the act after the woman told him that she had plans to marry another man.

D. Tharani, 35, who died of a stab wound to her neck is said to have been persistently accosted by the suspect who was her colleague since he befriended her three months ago.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Zani Che Din said yesterday investigators learnt that the man became upset after the victim told him of her plans to marry another man.

Asked if they were romantically involved, he said it is being investigated.

Police have obtained a seven-day remand on the suspect to facilitate investigations and are awaiting the victim’s post mortem report.

Tharani was a clerk at a management office of a condominium in Kota Damansara while the suspect was a security guard there.

Sources said at about 1pm on Monday the suspect, who is from Kajang, had asked her to lunch and they left in her car.

After the meal, they sat together in the mall’s carpark where the suspect allegedly proposed marriage. Apparently, when she spurned his proposal an argument ensued, which ended in Tharani being stabbed.

As she bled and succumbed to the injury in the front passenger seat, the suspect drove around aimlessly for over an hour before deciding to give himself up.

Personnel at the Damansara police station were taken aback when the man walked in at about 4pm to confess and had brought the body with him in the car.

Tharani’s family has denied knowledge of the suspect or a relationship between them.
