‘ Medical retirement’ for civil servants

> Scheme offers full pension to those suffering from chronic illnesses

PUTRAJAYA: Civil servants with chronic illnesses can opt for early retirement through an illhealth retirement scheme.

The proposed scheme, that will be tabled in Parliament next month, is expected to include the same welfare assistance provided to pensioners.

Public Service Department Director-General Tan Sri Zainal Rahim Seman said the scheme has been approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, adding that the scheme is expected to be implemented immediately once it is passed.

“We believe that if (those who have chronic illnesses) continue to work, their health may become worse or they may feel discomfort and may not be able to give their best at work, and that would affect their work performance and productivity.

“So, we give them the choice to retire early and give welfare assistance as though they have completed their full term.”

He said the new scheme is only for those who are seriously ill and incapable of carrying out their duties, as certified by qualified doctors.

“The illnesses include stroke, psychological disorders, physical incapacity caused by accidents or other chronic diseases.”

The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) welcomed the proposed scheme, which is also known as the “Atas Sebab Kesihatan” scheme.

Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda said the scheme will benefit some of the country’s 1.6 million civil servants.
