‘MRT fare among cheapest in the world’

-

PETALING JAYA: The current fare for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), as well as other rail services in the country, is among the cheapest in the world, said MRT Corp Sungai Buloh-SerdangPutrajaya (SSP) Line project director Datuk Amiruddin Ma’aris.

He said the public do not find taking the MRT a hassle due to the affordable fare.

“So far, when it comes to the MRT fares, it has never been a deterrent.

“Based on Line 1 of the MRT that was launched last year, as well as the Light Rail Transit and monorail, I would say we are among the cheapest compared with other countries.

“And the infrastructure we are providing is first class.”

Amiruddin was responding to claims that the MRT fare could be lower than the present rate.

He pointed out that travelling from Sungai Buloh to Kajang by MRT (from one end of Line 1 to the other, spanning 51km) would only cost RM5.50 per trip on a cashless fare system, and RM6.40 by cash.

On whether there would expect a fare hike when Line 2 of the MRT is launched in July 2022, Amiruddin said it was up to the government.

“We propose the fare table, but at the end of the day, the fare that is regulated and implemented is decided by the government, and in this case, the Land Public Transport Commission,” he said.
