> Johor ruler tells local authority heads not to take sides in coming general election

JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, yesterday categorically told mayors and presidents of local authorities to stay away from politics, reminding them that as civil servants, they are bound by their oath of office to remain neutral and not take sides in the coming polls.

“Don’t get involved in politics,” he said during a meeting with local authority chiefs at Istana Pasir Pelangi in Johor Baru.

He said the fundamental duty and responsibility of local authority heads is to spearhead development in their respective cities, municipalities or district councils.

“Do not forget that you are all civil servants. You must focus on effective administration and enforcement.”

Sultan Ibrahim, who posted this on his Facebook page, said it is incumbent on local authority chiefs to not only bring progress and development, but also resolve social problems in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

“I expect nothing less than full commitment and dedication in the discharge of your duties and responsibilities, without fear or favour of any parties.”

The Sultan also ordered mayors, presidents of local council and district officers to submit plans for the cleanliness and beautification of their towns for his perusal.

“It is also your job to clean and beautify your towns with good town planning and landscaping. Put the interests of the rakyat first with effective services and facilities,” he said.
