Tycoon’s statement in line with PM’s views

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak welcomes Tan Sri Robert Kuok’s statement that he deeply appreciates the opportunities he had received in Malaysia, an aide to the prime minister said yesterday.

Najib’s press secretary Datuk Seri Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad said Kuok’s statement on Monday was in line with what the premier said last week, that government aid was the key to the success of an individual even if one is disciplined and hardworking.

“The prime minister stressed that government policies are the key that opened up opportunities in the field of education, businesses and employment, allowing individuals to succeed,” Tengku Sarifuddin said.

“He (Najib) took as an example Kuok who became the richest man in Malaysia after being given the opportunity by the government to monopolise the sugar and rice industry previously,” he said in a statement.

He added that the tycoon’s success story as a businessman was also a story of Malaysia’s success, and that it has become an inspiration for other entrepreneurs.

Tengku Sarifuddin said Najib also noted Kuok’s statement that he recognised the contributions made by all Malaysians in the development of the country.

“Kuok stated that he appreciates Malaysian leaders who have throughout their lives done whatever it took for the betterment of the rakyat,” he said.

Kuok was in the limelight after controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin alleged last week that opposition party DAP was being financed by the tycoon through his nephew, James, and that Kuok also had an agenda to replace the current government.

Various Umno leaders then came out to condemn Kuok, including Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz.

In his statement on Monday Kuok, however, denied the allegations by Raja Petra, and thanked the government for the opportunities given to him.
