Tibetan dance treat at Chap Goh Meh celebration
GEORGE TOWN: This year’s state-level Chap Goh Meh celebration will feature the Jiuzhaigou Tibetan Dance Group which will be showcasing their national dance at the Esplanade on Friday.
The event will be held from 7pm to 10.30pm.
The Chap Goh Meh celebration, which is also known as the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day, will also feature the tradition of throwing mandarin oranges into the sea by single women in search of a life partner.
Penang State exco for Tourism Development Danny Law Heng Kiang said this year’s programme will also feature performances by school children.
Speaking at a press conference, Law said the participating schools are Phor Tay Primary School, Han Chiang High School, Chung Ling Private High School, Phor Tay High School and SMK Heng Ee.
“Over 20,000 people attended the celebration last year and we are expecting over 30,000 people this year,” he said.
There will also be a firework display courtesy of the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia representative Daphne Lim said it is working with the state government to offer a promo code for celebrants.
“The promo code ‘CHAPGOHMEH’ offers RM5 off for rides to and from Esplanade and is valid for Friday from 5pm to midnight,” she said.
Road closure will be between 4pm and midnight in Jalan Tun Syed Barakbah and from 6am in Jalan Padang Kota Lama.
