Guard surrenders at road block

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic police manning a road block were caught off guard when a motorist, walked up to them and admitted that he was a drug user at a traffic operation in the city on Sunday.

The 60-year-old man, clad in his security guard uniform apparently had slacked off while on duty to purchase drugs in the city when he was arrested at an integrated traffic operation near Dataran Merdeka.

The man had approached the police road block despite having drugs on him and admitted that he had been arrested on four occasions before this for similar offences.

City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said the operations, which began on Friday, involved 221 policemen from Bukit Aman, Dang Wangi and the City police headquarters.

He said the man tested positive for heroin and had a stash of heroin with him.

“Since Friday, we have issued more then 800 summonses for various offences.

“Most offences were for fancy number plates (145 summonses), number plates not following specifications (133), not affixing number plates (105), not having a valid driver’s licence (103) and expired road tax (93),” he said yesterday.

Zulkefly added the three-day traffic operation was jointly conducted by the Federal and City Traffic Department, Dang Wangi’s Narcotics and Serious Crime Division and the Road Transport Department.

The operation, which ended at midnight, saw more than a thousand motorists screened and checked.
