Your pathway to a medical career

> MMMC has produced medical professionals who are practising all over the world

-

TALK of the number of medical graduates inundating the Malaysian health system persists despite the fact that our nation is short of the 1:400 doctor-to-population target by the year 2020 set by the Malaysian government. Adding to this matter is the severe shortage of medical specialists around the globe, estimated around 7,000, in Malaysia.

It has become imperative therefore, for students who harbour aspirations of pursuing a noble career in healing, to carefully choose a medical school to enrol at, and where better than Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMC).

MMMC has been at the forefront of medical education since its inception in 1997. It has delivered high quality medical professionals with 3,700 having graduated to-date. Many of its alumni are now practising all over the globe.

Its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programmes provide thorough foundation for students who have their heart set on attaining postgraduate qualifications upon graduation. For those planning on taking this path, preparatory courses for the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) and United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) are available at MMMC’s campus in Malacca.

The college’s flagship programme is the MBBS, a twinning programme which allows students to complete 2.5 years of pre-clinical basic science studies at the Manipal campus, and return to Malaysia for a further 2.5 years of comprehensive clinical training. Those with financial concerns in registering for the MBBS can make an application to use the full allocation of RM150,000 under PTPTN.

The BDS, on the other hand, has seen seats filled up some 18 months before the intake. MMMC’s BDS programme is at par with the Manipal College of Dental Surgery in India, having been the top dental school in India for the past few years. PTPTN loans are also available for BDS applicants.

The MBBS and BDS programmes are conducted in collaboration with Manipal University, India which is recognised for imparting high quality professional education. It has been the preferred path to medicine for students from over 57 countries for the past 65 years. The university has 20 constituent colleges that offer over 195 courses across 14 streams, including Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Nursing, Allied Health, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Hotel Management, Regenerative Medicine, Geopolitics, Cultural Studies and others.

Developed to provide students with a sound academic foundation, especially for those with their hearts set on medicine, dentistry and other health science studies, MMMC offers the one-year Foundation in Science (FIS) pre-university programme at its Malacca campus.

Unlike pure science and mathematics subjects incorporated in general foundation programmes in Malaysia, the FIS programme comprises preclinical introductory subjects such as Basic Anatomy, Physiology, Basic Pharmacology, Forensic Science and Oral Biology.

Scholarships for the FIS programme are now available for students with straight As in their SPM and GCE O-Level examinations. Those with 7As are eligible for financial incentives.

Apart from its formal education, MMMC’s campus offers a fully and well equipped environment for study. Its infrastructure is built to ensure students are inspired to pursue knowledge with zest and passion.

Campus facilities cater to both teaching and learning as well as recreational needs. Academic facilities include lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, laboratories, a clinical skills learning centre and a fullyequipped library.
