Datin fails to show up

> Bailor also absent, High Court postpones review of sentence

SHAH ALAM: Datin Rozita Mohamed Ali ( pix), who was convicted of maid abuse, and her bailor failed to show up at the High Court here yesterday for a review of her sentence.

Rozita was bound over for five years on a good behaviour bond of RM20,000 by a sessions court last Thursday for causing grievous injuries to her maid two years ago.

The sentence sparked outrage among the legal fraternity, humanitarian organisations and the public as it was deemed too light.

Rozita had used a kitchen knife, clothes hanger, steel mop handle and an umbrella to cause multiple injuries to the victim’s head, hands, legs and internal organs.

High Court Judge Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah gave Selangor prosecution chief Mohamed Iskandar Ahmad until March 29 to trace and bring Rozita and her bailor to court.

Mohamed Iskandar told the court officers from his department had gone to Rozita’s house in Damansara and her family home in Malacca but still could not find her to serve the notice of urgency.

He also said her bailor was a personnel with the Air Force and his home was at the Subang base, where the notice of urgency was delivered.

Abd Majid said being a government officer, action can be taken against him for not appearing in court.

The judge postponed yesterday’s review of Rozita’s sentence to March 29.

Iskandar later told reporters outside the court that Rozita’s counsel had withdrawn from the case and was no longer representing her.

She was sentenced by the sessions court after she changed her plea to guilty to causing grievous injuries to Suyanti Sutrinso ( pix), 19, after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
