KUALA LUMPUR: Police have managed to take RM3.4 million worth of drugs off the streets in the first quarter of the year.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said police seized 1.14 tonnes of ganja nationwide from January to Tuesday.

“The drugs with a street value of RM3.4 million can cater to 22 million addicts,” he told reporters at the Gombak district police headquarters here yesterday.

Mohmad also revealed that police managed to seize another 175.6kg of ganja from two locals aged 23 and 35 on Tuesday.

He said the latest seizure took place at about 2.40am at the southbound Rawang toll plaza along the North-South Expressway.

The raid was conducted by the NCID’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group and anti-narcotics police from the Selangor and Kedah contingents.

“We found 176 slabs of compressed ganja stored in the boot of the suspect’s car, with an estimated street value of about RM528,000,” he said.

The drugs were smuggled from neighbouring countries and meant for local distribution to an estimated 351,000 addicts. Both suspects were remanded until March 27 and are being investigated under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Police earlier arrested a total of 35,116 people in connection with drug-related offences from Jan 1 to March 15 and seized drugs worth RM50 million.
