Who could leave Anfield?
> Klopp’s squad is relatively settled but there could be a couple of high profile departures
Having indefinitely lost his starting place to Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet has already suggested that he is considering a future away from Anfield, admitting in January that his current situation is “unhealthy”.
“This situation should not last too long, that is clear,” he told media in his native Belgium. “But I cannot say more about it either.”
Mignolet is unlikely to feature again this season outside of dead rubbers unless Karius suffers an injury, and would only fall further down the pecking order if a new goalkeeper arrives in the summer.
DANIEL STURRIDGE
January’s loan move to West Bromwich Albion was meant to kickstart Daniel Sturridge’s season and lay the foundations for a late run into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans.
Instead, just three games in, there came a hamstring injury and a reminder of the cruel hand this naturally-gifted striker has been dealt.
Sturridge’s fitness issues mean he cannot be trusted to provide regular, reliable cover for Liverpool’s front three and with him entering the final year of his Anfield contract this summer, a permanent move away appears likely.
DIVOCK ORIGI
Another striker out-on-loan and something of a forgotten man, Divock Origi provided adequate cover to Jürgen Klopp’s frontline last year but would now look somewhat out of place.
Liverpool have certainly got by fine without him and the Belgian has done little with Bundesliga strugglers Wolfsburg to warrant a return to the first-team squad.
In January, Origi admitted he would be open to staying in Germany on a permanent basis and by summer, it could be time to cash in on a rough diamond that has only sparkled intermittently.
ADAM BOGDAN
Yes, Adam Bogdan is still a Liverpool player more than two years on from a display at Watford that was poor enough to end his Anfield career on its own.
The former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper has acted as Klopp’s third-choice ‘keeper this season and will still have another year remaining on his contract at the end of the campaign.
Bogdan is most likely to stay until those terms expire, though his chances of adding to his six appearances in the last three seasons are much slimmer.
JON FLANAGAN
Flanagan pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court in January and was handed a 12-month community order as punishment. Flanagan avoided dismissal from Liverpool after the club felt it bore responsibility to help rehabilitate the 25-yearold full back, but it has been clear for some time that he has no future in Klopp’s firstteam squad. Currently on loan at Bolton, Flanagan is another whose Anfield contract expires next year and may be moved on while a fee can still be commanded.
LAZAR MARKOVIC
Lazar Markovic would have left Liverpool on a permanent basis some time ago if a suitor could have been found. There were offers for his services in January, but the only acceptable ones came with the intention of taking the Serbian winger on loan. Markovic is currently at Anderlecht but has so far failed to make impression in Belgium, featuring for just 20 minutes since his arrival. Unless a club is willing to meet Liverpool’s valuation in the summer, the 24-year-old is another who is likely to leave on the expiration of his contract in 2019.
