Corporate collaboration on education
> Officiating of Azman Hashim International Business School and partnership between AmBank Islamic, UTM and JomPAY
UNIVERSITI Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) International Business School has been renamed Azman Hashim International Business School in honour of prominent banker and distinguished corporate figure Tan Sri Azman Hashim.
The change gives recognition to Azman for his contribution to the development of education, especially at UTM.
Azman is the chairman of AmBank Group Berhad and also the trustee of Yayasan Azman Hashim.
A launch event was held on March 15 to mark the name change.
Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur signed a plaque to officiate the event, which was witnessed by Azman and other esteemed guests.
At a press conference held at UTM’s premises in Kuala Lumpur, Azman said: “I am thankful to UTM. It is a real privilege to be asked and be given the opportunity to have a school named after me. I really appreciate it, thank you very much.”
“I am really honoured to be given that privilege and also it comes to me as a responsibility now to see my name up there,” he added.
He said it makes him somewhat anxious yet enthusiastic, to think what else he can do and how else he can help the business school.
“What I want to say to other people like me, out there, is that they can do the same thing and (I want) to encourage those in the private sector and business people, to come forward,” he said.
His hope was that this message reaches out to the people as he shared that it was tough for universities without support from the private sector.
Yayasan Azman Hashim is a foundation that bolsters education – the reason Azman as the custodian has been supporting universities.
The foundation also agreed to make an endowment of RM30 million in instalments to UTM’s Endowment Fund. At the event, RM5 million was awarded, the third of five instalments within a span of six years.
Seven students receive RM12,000 a year each under the prestigious Azman Hashim scholarship. The recipients are selected based on academic excellence and they come from lower income families.
Noorul welcomed the contribution and involvement of the corporate sector, which offered “attachments”, “internship” and the endowment.
Meanwhile UTM vicechancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar informed that a hall in the university was named Dewan Azman Hashim, in honour of Azman.
At the same event, AmBank Islamic Berhad (AmBank Islamic) and UTM announced a partnership and introduced “JomPAY”, which serves as a channel for the public and corporate sector to make contributions towards the fund.
JomPAY is Malaysia’s largest online bill payment service with more than 3,000 biller codes. Via JomPAY, contributions can be made via internet banking, mobile banking and through ATMs of 40 banks in Malaysia, and at anytime, anywhere, which brings convenience, accessibility and flexibility to contributors. The biller code for UTM Education Endowment is “52225”.
“With this collaboration between UTM and ‘JomPAY’, we are pleased to embark on a valuebased intermediation to further assist the university in creating a vibrant and conducive academic environment, through the contributions channelled through JomPAY,” said AmBank Islamic CEO Eqhwan Mokhzanee.
