‘ Constitutional crisis’ in the making

> Passing of redelineation report before court’s judgment may cause chaos

SHAH ALAM: The passing of the redelineation report in Parliament may trigger a constitutional crisis in the country, a Selangor executive councillor said yesterday.

Speaking in the debate on an emergency motion to condemn the Election Commission’s (EC) redelineation exercise, exco member Elizabeth Wong ( pix) said this may happen as there is a pending court case filed by the state government.

She said the Court of Appeal would make its decision on the case filed by the state government over the redelineation exercise on Thursday (today).

“If the redelineation report is passed in Parliament (before the court’s judgment), it will turn into a constitutional crisis,” she said.

“They (the federal government) will become the contributor to the constitutional crisis in this country,” she added.

None of the BN assemblymen took part in the debate.

Later in a press conference, PKR assemblyman Xavier Jayakumar said that Selangor would be the state most affected by the redelineation exercise.

“We need to show our protest and send a message to Dewan Rakyat and its speaker (Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia) that Selangor has condemned the redelineation exercise,” he said.

He added while the motion had no legal implication, it was necessary to be done to manifest the stand taken by Selangor.

The emergency motion, proposed by Rajiv Rishyakaran (DAP-Bukit Gasing), was passed in the assembly through a majority voice vote.

Jayakumar said Selangor legislative assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh had submitted a letter to Pandikar informing the Dewan Rakyat on the resolution taken by the state legislature.
