Kudos! Sunway University
SUNWAY UNIVERSITY has won the country-level CFA Institute Research Challenge in Malaysia after going headto-head in a battle of analytical wits against three other finalist teams.
The university now advances to the Asia Pacific regionals, the Research Challenge, where they will compete against 100 students representing 24 teams. Only one regional winner will advance to the global finals. Both the regional and global competitions will be held between April 26 and 27 in Kuala Lumpur.
The annual competition provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in the areas of financial analysis and research report-writing. Presentations will be conducted and judged by a panel of financial and investment experts.
Sunway University’s winning team comprises faculty advisor Michelle Choo and students, Wong Huey Teng, Meenachiramnathan Arun, Tan Chee Yoong and Ho Hang Jian.
The team analysed and presented an investments thesis on Westports Holdings Berhad to the panel comprising CFA director of Fortress Capital Asset Management Geoffrey Ng, CFA senior analyst of VCAM Asset Managers Sdn Bhd Vince Ng, and CFA Permodalan Nasional Berhad’s head of Investment in the Analysis Department of Asset Management Lim Cheng Ean, among others.
Hopes are high for the team as they now prepare for the finals. Huey Teng said that despite being ecstatic over their win, the team is also humbled. “This is a local level competition and we need to continue to benchmark ourselves with the best in order to win at the regional and global competitions,” she said.
Indirectly giving the team’s winning spirit a boost was Meenachiramnathan who said, “With Malaysia being the home ground for this year’s global challenge, we should aim to make Malaysia proud by winning it.”
