Yip marks 70th birthday with Genting concert

HONG KONG Cantopop diva Frances Yip ( left) returns to Resorts World Genting for a special concert celebratin­g 70 years of her life and her music. The one-night only Happy 70th Frances Live in Genting concert will take place at Resorts World Genting’s Arena of Stars on June 16. Now based in Sydney, Australia, Yip was discovered at the Sharp’s Night Four Lights Competitio­n on Hong Kong television in 1969.

She was then signed by EMI Records, and went on to record over 80 albums in a career that spanned almost half a century.

She was also known for her versatilit­y, being able to sing in a variety of languages including Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Japanese, Malay, and Thai.

At the Hong Kong sovereignt­y transfer ceremony in 1997, she was the face of the nation, serving as co-presenter.

She is best known for performing theme songs for famous TVB television drama series in the 1980s and early 1990s, including her signature tune, Shanghai Beach, the theme song of The Bund, the celebrated TVB series about old Shanghai gangsters starring Chow Yun-Fat.

Fans can expect to hear that famous song at the concert, along with other numbers such as Wishes from The Bund II, and covers of songs such as You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me and Besame Mucho that defined her early career.

Tickets to the Happy 70th Frances Live in Genting concert, which starts at 8.30pm, is now on sale.
