9 held over birth­day ‘ bash’

SHAH ALAM: Po­lice have de­tained nine sus­pects on Mon­day over a vi­ral video, which showed sev­eral sec­ondary school stu­dents al­legedly beat­ing up an­other stu­dent to “cel­e­brate” his birth­day.

Se­lan­gor Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment chief SAC Fadzil Ah­mat said fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent, po­lice de­tained nine 17-year-old stu­dents at about 11.30am at a school.

“The teenagers were all in Form Five male stu­dents,” he said.

Upon ques­tion­ing, the stu­dents al­legedly in­volved in the in­ci­dent were re­leased at 4.45pm un­der po­lice bail the same day.

He said the in­ves­ti­ga­tion pa­per on the in­ci­dent will be re­ferred to the state pub­lic prose­cu­tor soon.

Ear­lier yes­ter­day, it was re­ported that the vic­tim in the video had lodged a po­lice re­port.

Fadzil said the 17-year-old vic­tim made the re­port at the district po­lice head­quar­ters on Sun­day.

“The in­ci­dent took place on Feb 8. We had al­ready ini­ti­ated a de­tailed in­ves­ti­ga­tion be­fore he lodged the re­port,” he said.

Fadzil said po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the mat­ter un­der Sec­tion 148 of the Pe­nal Code for ri­ot­ing.

It is un­der­stood the school in Shah Alam has iden­ti­fied all the stu­dents in­volved and will con­duct an in­ves­ti­ga­tion as well.

The 30-sec­ond video shows nine stu­dents singing “Happy Birth­day” to the vic­tim be­fore as­sault­ing him with a broom, kicks and punches.

The Ed­u­ca­tion Min­istry had said it is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the in­ci­dent.

Deputy Ed­u­ca­tion Min­is­ter Datuk P. Ka­malanathan said such an in­ci­dent should not have hap­pened.
