9 held over birthday ‘ bash’
> Cops detain students at school after victim lodges report
SHAH ALAM: Police have detained nine suspects on Monday over a viral video, which showed several secondary school students allegedly beating up another student to “celebrate” his birthday.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said following the incident, police detained nine 17-year-old students at about 11.30am at a school.
“The teenagers were all in Form Five male students,” he said.
Upon questioning, the students allegedly involved in the incident were released at 4.45pm under police bail the same day.
He said the investigation paper on the incident will be referred to the state public prosecutor soon.
Earlier yesterday, it was reported that the victim in the video had lodged a police report.
Fadzil said the 17-year-old victim made the report at the district police headquarters on Sunday.
“The incident took place on Feb 8. We had already initiated a detailed investigation before he lodged the report,” he said.
Fadzil said police are investigating the matter under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
It is understood the school in Shah Alam has identified all the students involved and will conduct an investigation as well.
The 30-second video shows nine students singing “Happy Birthday” to the victim before assaulting him with a broom, kicks and punches.
The Education Ministry had said it is investigating the incident.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said such an incident should not have happened.
