Mum jeans are making a comeback

-

A NEW trend has left some over a certain age shaking their heads in disbelief: how could the 90s classic “Mum jeans” be back in town?

But it’s true. Fashion is returning ruthlessly to this retro classic, known for its high waistband sitting above the belly button and carrot-shaped legs that narrow towards the ankles, often rolled up into a cuff.

And – if you can push past the premature nostalgia and flashbacks – these trousers actually offer a flattering look.

“The high waistline and the tapered shape at the bottom leaves many women doubting whether the garment will suit their figure,” says fashion consultant Andreas Rose. “The bum does look flatter, but also wider.”

Yet Rose has faith in the trousers. “The high-fitting jeans make for a harmonious silhouette,” says the stylist. “Mum jeans add a touch of retro charm to any casual look.”

And, they offer more room for play. “The seat pockets are higher up than on average jeans, the cut on the hips is generous,” explains Rose.

She also recommends pairing mom jeans with feminine blouses or androgynous shirts, which “can be tucked in”.

To finish off the outfit, use an eye-catching belt with a statement buckle. “Men’s shoes like loafers or brogues give the denim must-haves a particularly casual look and keep it from looking too old-fashioned.” – dpa
