BAGAN DATUK: Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday urged the people not to be fooled by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tactics to gain their sympathy.

Commenting on recent allegations of sabotage in the run-up to the 14th general election, Ahmad Zahid said Mahathir had used similar tactics when he was the prime minister to gain the people’s sympathy.

“We have been fooled by his tactics before... and he is using similar tactics now but with a different approach,” he said after attending an Armed Forces social programme in Kampung Sungai Sumun near Hutan Melintang.

Mahathir’s allegation was about Customs and Immigration officials checking him at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang when he arrived from Terengganu last Tuesday.

Earlier, Mahathir had claimed that the aircraft he was to have boarded at Subang for Langkawi had been sabotaged by certain quarters.

Ahmad Zahid also took former deputy premier Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to task for alleging that Barisan Nasional (BN) “would do anything” to prevent the people from going to the polls on May 9.

“It does not make sense. He was in my Festive season with

Tposition ( as deputy prime minister). He should not make such allegations once he is no longer in the government,” he said in response to allegations by Muhyiddin that BN would even resort to felling trees to block roads. Mean whi l e , in KLUANG, caretaker

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein lambasted Mahathir for writing an open letter to the top brass of the military and the police, urging for their men to be allowed to vote freely in the election.

He said it was improper for Mahathir to question the freedom of choice among security personnel when the stability during his 22-year tenure as prime minister was achieved with the help of security forces.

“I want to ask Tun, has he ever forced the military and police (to vote for him) during his tenure?

“If he was able to maintain his position for 22 years, why is there a need to question the position of the military and police now?

“We have never forced the police and military (to vote for the ruling party),” he said after attending an event in Pekan Chamek, Paloh, near here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Mahathir said if he were to be arrested, it would trigger a surge of support for the Opposition.

“A lot of people are worried that I will be arrested. If they want to arrest me, go ahead.

“Many more people will come out to support the Opposition,” he said during a speech at the Kerinchi PPR yesterday.
