KANGAR: An unemployed man was charged in the magistrate’s court yesterday with the death of a six-year-old boy two weeks ago.

Noraizuwan Hamali, 26, was charged with murdering Muhammad Rayyan Hidayat Hairil Khan at 33, Jalan Arau, Lorong Chempaka, Kampung Jejawi near here, between 3.45pm on April 18 and 12.10am the following day.

The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death sentence.

However, no plea was recorded as the accused told the court he did not understand the charge.

The charge was read out to him twice by the court interpreter and again by magistrate Norhayati Ibrahim, who set June 4 for mention, Bernama reported.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Nordin Ismail prosecuted, while Noraizuwan was unrepresented.

Mohammad Rayyan, believed to be the son of the accused’s girlfriend, was initially taken to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital here after he suffered bouts of vomiting. He later became unconscious. He died the following day. A post-mortem at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star showed that Mohammad Rayyan’s ribs were broken and his colon was torn.

Police detained Noraizuwan and the boy’s mother when they showed up at the district police station to have their statements recorded. The woman was subsequently released on bail.
