> Starbucks’ eighth Global Month of Service endeavour

-

A Tthe break of dawn on April 21, the sleepy housing community of Taman Ikan Emas on the outskirts of Cheras was abuzz with volunteers from Starbucks Malaysia and non-profit environmental organisation EcoKnights.

Celebrating the eighth Global Month of Service (GMoS), Starbucks Malaysia’s Green Outreach Programme welcomed EcoKnights on-board to establish a sustainable Community Edible Garden for the Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas community in the hopes of improving the livelihood of its residents. Spanning 30 meters in length and running along the Kerayong River, plans in the pipeline involve an area that opens up further once the community is better equipped to maintain a larger garden.

“Every year in April, Starbucks will embark on what we call Global Month of Service. This is an initiative by Starbucks and the main purpose is to express our commitment in uniting our partners, customers, friends and family, to positively impact communities,” said Starbucks Malaysia director of partner resources and compliance June Beh.

Together with EcoKnights, Starbucks Malaysia raised a total of RM15,000 through the sale of limited-edition Starbucks Reusable Cups. The monies derived from the coffee company’s April campaign where RM1 from each purchased cup was contributed to EcoKnights’ efforts in helping communities build their own Edible Garden and operating workshops for the public.

Throughout the year, Starbucks Malaysia will work with EcoKnights on their workshops aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge on farming and gardening through composting and up-cycling among other initiatives.

“We are honoured to be able to collaborate with Starbucks Malaysia to organise these meaningful and effective programmes that help to create awareness among communities and Starbucks’ customers, in addition to educating them on the importance of taking care of our environment through impactful actions,” said EcoKnights programme director Fadly Bakhtiar.

Starbucks’ GMoS is aimed at bringing together its partners, employees, customers, non-profit organisations, civic leaders, business partners, friends and family, to make time towards creating positive and meaningful change in the communities that they serve by holding local service events.
