Why Arsenal and Chelsea snubbed Enrique

-

ARSENAL and Chelsea have decided against appointing Luis Enrique due to his ‘arrogant’ manner.

The former Barcelona boss was a top target for both London clubs this summer.

Enrique was high on the agenda of the Gunners after it was announced Arsene Wenger would be stepping down at the end of the campaign.

Antonio Conte’s future has still not been cleared up but he is expected to go despite winning the FA Cup.

And Enrique has been an option to take over at Stamford Bridge with the 2015 Champions League winner out of work.

The Spaniard, 48, has taken a one-year long sabbatical since leaving the Nou Camp after three years at the helm at Barcelona.

However, while he was pursued by the Premier League duo, Enrique is not set to end up at either club.

And according to Spanish newspaper Marca, the outcome is down to his personality and attitude in meetings with Arsenal and Chelsea.

Blues director Marina Granovskaia, who works closely with owner Roman Abramovich, was initially optimistic of reaching an agreement with Enrique after talks back in January and February.

But it is said his persona prevented any progress being made, with Chelsea’s hierarchy deeming him ‘arrogant’.

Arsenal had concerns over his salary demands, and again the tone in negotiations led to the Gunners cooling their interest, Marca adds.

Arsenal did not appreciate his demands and the mood around the meetings.

Instead, they are opting for former captain Mikel Arteta as head coach, with an appointment expected soon.
