‘I will turn myself in’

- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos ( pix), who went missing for five days, has said he will turn himself in today and that it was all a misunderstanding.

The Sungai Besar Umno division chief said he never intended to flee from police.

In an audio message sent to the media yesterday, the Red Shirts movement leader said he will turn up at the police station at 2.30pm to resolve the matter, which he considers a “misunderstanding”.

“I hope the media can give coverage so that I can explain the allegations that I escaped police custody during remand. It was a small misunderstanding,” he said.

Jamal was warded at a private hospital in Ampang last week for a spinal ailment .

He was arrested for offences such as causing public nuisance and trespassing but had to remain in hospital for treatment under a remand order.

On Friday, while still warded, he was charged for causing public nuisance when he held a protest against the Better Beer Festival 2017 at the Selangor state secretariat in Shah Alam in October last year where he smashed beer bottles with a sledgehammer.

The case is set for mention at the Shah Alam magistrate’s court on June 8.

He was allowed bail of RM3,000 but failed to show up to sign the necessary documents.

Police mounted a search for Jamal, who three days later, made a statement that he was unaware he had to sign documents.

He claimed he had rushed off to Tabung Haji on Friday to withdraw funds for the bail. His lawyers also claimed that Jamal had no intention of fleeing.
