Arrest warrant for ‘no show’ Jamal soon

- BY CHARLES RAMENDRAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will apply for a warrant of arrest today for Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos after several times of making empty promises to meet police to validate his court bail documents.

“We have given him enough space to show up and to complete the bail documents but to date he has failed to do so. Since he has not done so, his bail is invalid and that makes him a wanted man. He is being probed for escaping police custody under Section 224 of the Penal Code. We will apply for the arrest warrant tomorrow,” Selangor police CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat told theSun.

Fadzil said Jamal was investigated for a total of nine offences of which he was charged for three on Friday.

He said the charges for the remaining six cases will tentatively be mounted on the fugitive in stages in the near future.

It is learnt that since his disappearance on Friday, a police hunt for Jamal is ongoing. Earlier yesterday, Jamal who said he would give himself up at the Ampang district police headquarters failed to show up to sign his court bail papers.

The fugitive had released an audio message on Tuesday to the media claiming he will meet Ampang police at 2.30pm.

His team of lawyers showed up on time at the station but more than an hour later Jamal was nowhere to be seen.

A group of about 40 journalists and photographers who arrived earlier and waited for Jamal in heavy drizzle were later approached by his lead lawyer Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin.

“Jamal is not contactable at this time and we do not know why he has chosen not to come. Even his family doesn’t know his whereabouts,” he said.

In a statement he issued at about 4.30pm, Jamal said he believes there are “invisible hands” at work to ensure he faces harsh action by the law.
