1MDB AG’s top priority

> Tommy to also look into repealing oppressive laws, lopsided contracts TABUNG HARAPAN MALAYSIA

- BY TIMOTHY ACHARIAM AND G. SURACH

PUTRAJAYA: Newly appointed AttorneyGeneral Tommy Thomas yesterday revealed his three main priorities.

“The government’s first and immediate priority is all matters pertaining to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

“I have to study the papers and we shall institute criminal and civil proceedings against the alleged wrongdoers,” he said on his first day of work.

“All are equal before the law and no one will be spared. There will be no cover up.”

He said authorities in Luxembourg, Singapore, Switzerland and other countries will be contacted for assistance.

“We (want) the billions stolen from taxpayers returned to the country.”

Second on his list is to work on repealing oppressive laws.

“The prime minister has announced the end of the goods and services tax and the Anti-Fake News law, but the list of other such laws is pretty long and the Chambers have to take steps to repeal them either in whole or in part on an urgent basis,” he said.

Thirdly, he aims to study obligations and contracts made by the previous government that are lopsided against the country.

“We have to independently study the international obligations,” he said.

He also said selective prosecution will be stopped, and that those who have committed no wrong will not have to fear.

“Malaysia is a free country. We should not fear the midnight knock of the policeman. But those who flout the law will be met with the full force of the law regardless of their station in life.”

Thomas said he had received assurance that government officials will not interfere in the discharge of his duties.

“I have spoken to the prime minister and he has given me a free hand in the AG’s Chambers and there will be no interference.

“On my part, I promise to do the right thing, that is to tell the truth and do justice.” RM (Raised so far)
