How to keep your lipstick looking fresh

-

LIPSTICK is supposed to be the crowning element of your look – a splash of colour that's fresh, sensual and striking. But as the day goes on and it starts to fade, it can have the opposite effect.

Even after a short while, lipstick can appear faded, feathered and – at worst – flakey and chapped. Contributing factors to this worn-out appearance are often unavoidable activities such as talking, drinking, eating, touching your face and kissing.

But two simple additions to your routine can combat this: Using a primer and a lip pencil can do wonders to extend lipstick's wearability.

"If I want to ensure a longlasting effect, I always apply a base," explains Peter Schmidinger, a make-up expert from German cosmetics association VKE.

Lip base products – often labelled as "primers" – work by filling out the fine creases of the lip. These creases and lines are what contribute to the product wearing off in an undesirable manner.

A base product provides a foundation layer that stops the lipstick from seeping into the fine lines, making your lips look sup- ple and smooth. The coating also helps the colour hold for longer, says the expert.

To add a second touch of durability, he recommends tracing the contours of the lips with a lip pencil.

"I begin by colouring in the lips once over, starting in the middle and working outwards," says Schmidinger. "Then I colour the entire contour of the lips with gentle, consecutive strokes of a lip pencil."

Follow these steps, and your lips will be primed for whatever the day throws at them. – dpa
