> Razaleigh better candidate if he agrees to contest president’s post

JOHOR BARU: Johor Umno has said it will not support Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for the president’s post in the party polls, saying Umno would not be able to make a comeback with the same people leading the party.

Several Umno members and leaders told theSun that a better candidate would have been able to pick up the signals that voters were sending out in the run-up to the 14th general election.

“(The candidate) should be a quality leader with the right credentials,” former Kempas assemblyman Datuk Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Tengku Abdul Hamid Jumat (pix) said yesterday, adding that the president would have to work hard and help Umno make a strong comeback in the next general election.

Saying Ahmad Zahid is not their choice, some Johor Umno leaders have opted to support Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, although the Gua Musang MP has yet to announce his decision to contest the top post.

Sources said Johor Umno wants former Johor mentri besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin as vice-president.

Other candidates on the list are Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan for deputy president and Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and Khairy Jamaluddin as vicepresidents.

Haron Aminurrashid will vie for the Pulai Umno division chief post and a supreme council seat.

He said Tengku Razaleigh would be a far better candidate for president, if he agrees to be a candidate.

He also said the Pakatan Harapan government will not be able to live up to the expectations of the people, whose patience would eventually run out as there would not be much progress in fulfilling its campaign promises.

“If we have new faces at the top and supreme council levels in Umno, it will send a strong signal to the people that we have heard their message and will change.”
