‘.my’ outage: Firm slammed

> Accused of slow response, Mynic says its team acted promptly

-

PETALING JAYA: Mynic Bhd, which manages “.my” domains, have come under scrutiny over a technical glitch that caused many Malaysian websites to be inaccessible.

It was not a small outage affecting a small number of domains as all 340,638 .my domains under Mynic’s care and control were affected, Lowyat.NET said yesterday.

Eight Mynic-controlled Top-Level Domains ending with .my suffix stopped resolving across the internet from about 4.30pm on Friday, it said.

“While this was not immediately visible to a casual internet user, many started experiencing issues with online transactions, and those browsing websites on the .my domain started facing intermittent disruptions,” Lowyat said on its portal.

Lowyat.NET said it published its report on the outage at about 11.30pm, and it took Mynic another five hours to acknowledge the issue via a tweet from its official Twitter account.

“That is about 12 hours from the time we roughly estimated the issues. If they are now aware and have acknowledged the issues, we would expect an organisation as important as Mynic would be able to swiftly resolve the issues,” Lowyat.NET said.

Media outlets subsequently picked up on their story, as well as warnings against conducting online transactions on .my domains until the issue was resolved.

“Mynic has already had a number of hacking issues before this, and with the lack of updates from Mynic on the current issue, there is always a concern that the outage could lead to a similar scenario,” it added.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mynic said its technical team acted on the incident the moment it received a report of .my domain services intermittent outages late on Friday night.
