> Here’s the scoop on the sunglasses trends for 2018

SUNGLASSES are perennial accessories, but when the sun comes out, they are more than useful – they protect one’s eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

German eyewear fashion expert Kerstin Kruschinski reports back from the fashion fairs in Paris, Milan, Copenhagen and Munich to give you a scoop on sunglasses trends for 2018.

Small and futuristic

Tiny sunglasses may well become the “absolute mega-trend this summer”, Kruschinski forecasts. The design is both futuristic and retro at the same time, says the expert.

If you want to wear tiny sunglasses, you should wear them lower than where usual glasses sit, towards the middle of your nose. This does, however, somewhat defeat the protective purpose of the glasses, however, the casual aesthetic achieved by wearing glasses low could be worth it, if you don’t mind an accessory that serves only a decorative purpose.

Small glasses, popularised by John Lennon and a hit the 1970s are particularly suited for those with oval, square or heart-shaped faces. Most sunglasses are contoured with at least a slight curve that follows the shape of the brow and cheekbone.

But a completely flat-surfaced kind of sunglasses, such as the throw-away 3D glasses you may have received at the cinema, are also predicted to be a big trend this summer. You may also spot this kind by their mirrored-lenses.

Not just rose-coloured glasses

Coloured glasses may take some getting used to, and not just for the wearer but also for whomever meets the wearer’s gaze. Depending on the colour, they can give off an almost alienlike appearance. Kruschinski thinks that such bravely hued specs are really in the domain of “fashion it-girls” and influencers.

They may also alter the mood of the wearer through their unusual colour distortion, which is probably why coloured lens glasses are often a music festival favourite.

Transparent glasses

If coloured lenses are a bit much for you but you would still like to experiment with some avant-garde sunglasses then transparent frames may be a good choice for you. Colourless acetate frames, which have enjoyed popularity in regular glasses for some time now, are elegant and unobtrusive on the face.

They are also very versatile and should work well with most outfits. If you are in the market for an ultratrendy combination, transparent frames paired with coloured lenses will ensure a standout look. – dpa
